We were somewhere around Gräfenhainichen, on the edge of the lake, when the fatigue began to take hold. I remember saying something like:

- I feel a bit tired. Maybe we should stop for a snack.

Suddenly, there was a terrible buzz all around us, and the sky was full with what looked like huge mosquitoes, all swooping and humming and diving around the bikes, and a voice was screaming:

- Holy Jesus! What are these goddamn insects?!
- Did you say something?
- Hm? Never mind. Twenty klicks to the camp site.

No point in mentioning these mosquitoes, I thought. Poor bastard will see them soon enough.
